Switch Sales Near 8M, Nintendo Aims For 14M in First Year

As has been the case in many digital chess games before it, Chess Ultra is set to include a selection of different boards, environments, and pieces, including an interesting-sounding "Fire and Brimstone" set where pieces can catch fire during gameplay.

Nintendo has doubled its revenue estimate for 2017 following demand for the Nintendo Switch console.

Nintendo said it now expects operating profit for the current financial year of 120 billion yen ($1.06 billion), almost double the 65 billion yen ($572 million) it predicted three months ago. To put that number into perspective, Wii U sales still have not topped 14 million units. That compared with a 38.3 billion net profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Nintendo Switch has sold 7.63 million units worldwide since it released almost seven months ago, Nintendo has announced. I'm still looking forward to checking out Mario Odyssey and revisiting LA Noire on Switch before the end of the year.

Nintendo (NTDOY) shares shot up Monday after the video game heavyweight said it almost doubled its profit outlook and said it expects to sell millions more Switch consoles than previously thought.

Nintendo now expects profit of 120 billion yen (US$1.06 billion) for the year ending March versus 65 billion yen estimated three months ago, boosted by Switch sales as well as a weaker yen against the euro. Because of this, it's no surprise folks are more receptive to Switch than they were to Wii U.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said: "The true power of the Switch would be tested during the upcoming holiday season". Year over year, hardware was up by 5 percent while software sales for the 3DS were down 28 percent.

But Nintendo appears to have learned from that experience as it prepares to roll out a mobile version of another popular game, "Animal Crossing".
