Microsoft again challenges Consumer Reports Surface findings: every generation getting better

The Surface Pro with LTE will ship on December 1 to business customers, with a base model price tag of $1,149.

As Microsoft's hardware chief did earlier this year, Gavin challenged the methodology used by Consumer Reports at the time.

"We are at the edge of a major technology shift towards more intelligent computing - one fueled by the rise of data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning", the company said in a blog post. But even with these evolutionary advancements to the Surface family, it's hard to forget what Consumer Reports said about the reliability of Microsoft's Surface devices. For example, that "for business customers" bit, where the device (s) will be sold, and so on.

Microsoft will launch a version of its Surface Pro laptop with built-in LTE connectivity here in December.

Business users who are exhausted of hunting for available and presumably safe WiFi network connections for their Surface Pros will soon have a new option, announced Microsoft on October 31.

Microsoft has experimented with LTE in Surface devices in the past, but now believes LTE networks are at the right stage. Microsoft boasted that the Surface Pro gets 13.5 hours of battery life, though in my own tests, I found it to be much lower.

The basic version of the Surface Pro with Intel i5, 4GB RAM is being priced at $1,149 and the device with 8GB RAM will be costing $1,449.

"With a Cat 9 modem, Surface Pro with LTE Advanced is the fastest LTE-enabled laptop in its class", Mr. Panay says. It also supports accessories like the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial. If that timing sounds familiar, it's because a Microsoft employee accidentally revealed it during an Ignite session last month.

An extra bonus for British customers is that the 13-inch Surface Book 2 will be landing in the United Kingdom in November, with the 15-inch model available next year.
