Woman killed when 12-year-old boy jumps off highway overpass

Her boyfriend, who was sat in the front passenger seat, was able to steer the auto off the highway.

Harris, a 22-year-old from Maryland, was articulated dead at the scene after her sweetheart, who was in the traveler's seat and stayed uninjured, took control of the auto and controlled it to security.

State police are investigating the incident as an attempted suicide.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the boy apparently jumped from the Cedar Lane overpass above Interstate 66 in Fairfax County, landing on the 2005 Ford Escape that Harris was driving.

Harris' boyfriend was sitting in the front passenger seat.

"She was caring - I mean she had an absolute love for children", Harris's mother, Leigh Miller, told the Washington Post.

Harris, who grew up in Marlyland, lived in Arlington and was pursuing a master's degree in clinical counseling at Marymount University. The boy was transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Lisa Jackson-Cherry, a professor at Marymount, said Harris showed great promise as a counselor.

Bruce said his niece was just getting started to live an altruistic life helping children.

Harris completed her graduation in 2013 from Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland, where she had been part of a graduating class of 347 students.

"She didn't even get an opportunity to begin her life", Bruce said.

"That's the irony that we're looking at right now", he said, describing Marisa as outgoing, with an affinity for the outdoors. "I miss her so much".
