Jahlil Okafor wants out after 76ers decline option

Jahlil Okafor badly wants a buyout from the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Boston Celtics are a possible destination for him if he receives it.

Okafor will join Anthony Bennett (first overall pick in 2013) and Hasheem Thabeet (second overall pick in 2009) as other first-round picks in the top three that did not have their fourth-year options exercised.

"Bryan didn't think [a buyout] would be a great idea", Okafor said, "because he said he would be giving me away to a team for free". "This is my life. I just want something to happen rather quickly".

As the 76ers have rallied around and found some semblance of promise in their duo of Embiid and Ben Simmons, Okafor has played in just one game this season: 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes in a 34-point loss to Toronto. In an offense where Okafor, Embiid, and C Nerlens Noel starred for the front court, the floor spacing was often cramped an uneven, which prompted the 76ers to reduce Okafor's minutes, leaving him as the odd man out.

It will be interesting to see if the Bulls push for a deal to land Okafor before the end of the year or just try to outright sign him in free agency. "Let him go play somewhere because I'm 21".

Okafor says that he didn't believe he'd still be with the Sixers when the deadline for his option came up. Hopefully he'll get that chance next season, or even sooner.

Okafor's injury history and the perception that he is a defensive liability have a lot to do with why the Sixers have been unable to move him. "A buyout's not the only option". Now I'm just in a position to where, how can I get on the court?

Okafor has requested a trade or buyout from the 76ers and was open about trying to find a new team. "Bryan just didn't deem they were fair, which I understand, I'm a No. 3 pick [in 2015]".

Following a strong rookie season, it is an unfortunate situation for Okafor. "I was playing so I didn't really have any complaints".

"I tried to do everything the right way", Okafor said.
