Gujarat polls: BJP asks for 'Padmavati's pre-screening for Rajput reps

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati has got stuck in a loop of controversies as pressure seems to be mounting on Bhansali and his team when it comes to screening of the film for politicians and the right-wing groups.

The political party has alleged that Padmavati has wrongly depicted the history as they link queen Padmavati with aggressive ruler Alauddin Khilji. The Rajput outfits have demanded that the film be shown to them, but the producers say that the film is still not ready. The Congress on the other hand has said that the film should be banned if it "distorts history". Reportedly, Bhansali is yet again under the radar of Karni Sena group who were in the news for wrecking the sets of Padmavati in Jaipur.

"We are writing to the ECI, CBFC and the Centre, seeking to stop the film's release for a temporary period till the issue is resolved", BJP spokesperson IK Jadeja said on Wednesday.

Jadeja said that the party would like the Election Commission "to arrange for a pre-release viewing of the film by select Rajput representatives to alleviate their raised tempers and provide fair opportunity to prevent unnecessary tension ahead of polls". The only thing that we want is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali should show the movie to some of the foremost people of our organisation and tell them that we are not tempering any fact of the history. In the years after 1540, the legend was strengthened by Hindu and Kshatriya scholars to establish Rani Padmavati as a "real historical character" though her existence doesn't really find any mention in the texts of the time when Chittor was actually conquered by Khilji.

The protestors led by the founder patron of the Rajput Karni Sena, Lokendra Singh Kalvi burnt the effigy of Bhansali and gave a memorandum to the collector demanding that the film not be released.

Padmavati, which stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, is scheduled to release on December 1.

In March some miscreants broke the mirrors in Padmini Mahal (palace) in Chittorgarh Fort where Alauddin Khilji is believed to have seen Rani Padmavati or Padmini.
