Beyonce to Star in Disney's Live-Action 'Lion King'

Beyonce to Star in Disney's Live-Action 'Lion King'

Fans were quick to share their joy at the casting news, with one tweeting: "It's not called the Lion King anymore".

Jon Favreau's The Lion King is one of the most anticipated remakes on the lineup (though calling it live-action is a bit of a stretch since it will be nearly entirely CG a la The Jungle Book), and Disney has officially confirmed the full voice cast, along with a new synopsis. Now, before the official cast list came out, we already knew that Donald Glover would be starring as Simba.

Rumors have swirled in Hollywood for months about Beyoncé's reported attachment to the project, but she waited until Wednesday to confirm her role as Nala in a Facebook post. JD McCrary will play the Young Simba and Shahadi Wright Joseph will play the Young Nala.

Other stars who have signed up for the film include Seth Rogen as Pumba the warthog and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar. Jon Favreau, who directed the Jungle Book remake, is directing the Lion King movie. You'll have to wait nearly two years because the film is set for a July 19, 2019 release.

The live-action remake is sure to be a victor.

But what about the original king of the Pride Lands?

Live-action renditions of beloved classics have become a cornerstone for Disney in recent years.
