No. 24 Michigan State upsets No. 7 Penn State

Saturday's match-up between Michigan State and Penn State is now in a lightning delay.

In between, Michigan State's Brian Lewerke answered with throwing score of his own to Darrell Stewart.

The Nittany Lions still plan to plead their case to the College Football Playoff committee, and a big win over the Spartans could start the momentum shift to recover from last week's one-point loss to Ohio State.

LJ Scott's 3-yard run capped a 91-yard Spartans drive midway through the third quarter and gave them a 21-14 lead.

McSorley had Thompkins open on a slant, but the ball went through the wideout's hands and put possession back in favor of the Spartans. When it restarted, Michigan State faced third-and-4 from Penn State 37-yard line with 7:58 to play in the first half. Tyler Davis' 26-yard field goal later in the quarter moved Penn State within four points.

Penn State pulled back in front 14-7 before the end of the quarter. Ultimately, not even Mother Nature could save the Nittany Lions from the tail end of a three-game East Division maelstrom. If the Spartans can win the rest of their games this season, they will be the Big Ten East Champions. The Spartans came into Saturday's game allowing less than 90 rushing yards per game, and once again rendered that part of an opponent's offense inconsequential. Franklin decided against a field-goal attempt on fourth-and-8 from the Michigan State 27.

Saturday's marked the second weather-delayed game of the season for Michigan State, following their 30-27 win at Minnesota on October 14, in which the start was bumped back. Both were injured in last week's 39-38 loss to Ohio State and didn't dress on Saturday.
