Deaths Reported in a Mass Shooting at a Texas Church

Authorities haven't said how many were killed or wounded, but a Wilson County commissioner, Albert Gamez, told cable news outlets that emergency officials told him more than 20 people were slain and more than 20 others were wounded, though those figures hadn't been confirmed.

Two officials have identified the suspect in a mass shooting at a Texas church as Devin Kelley.

At least 26 were reported killed in the attack, according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Sherri Pomeroy, wife of Pastor Frank Pomeroy, said in a text message that she lost her daughter "and many friends" in the shooting.

The incident, which left at least 20 other people injured, occurred yesterday at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs in Wilson County where a man in "full gear" barged into the church and began shooting parishioners.

Police, ambulances and helicopters swarmed to the small church 35 miles east of San Antonio.

The pastor of the church and his wife were out of town during the shooting, but she told the Associated Press their daughter was one of the people who died.

President Donald Trump said he was monitoring the situation while in Japan on a 12-day Asian trip. "The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene", he said on Twitter.

Abbot is en route to Sutherland Springs to speak with law enforcement and the victims. Ted Cruz (R-TX) tweeted "keeping all harmed in Sutherland Springs in our prayers". "More details from DPS (Department of Public Safety) soon".

A woman who lives about 10 minutes away from Sutherland Springs in Floresville and was monitoring the chaos on a police scanner and in Facebook community groups, said that everyone knows everyone in the sparsely populated county.

Sunday's incident would mark the fifth deadliest mass shooting in the last 50 years in the United States.

The gunman's motive is unknown, and authorities have not said whether Sunday's incident was terror related. Sunday's incident comes just five weeks after the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history shook Las Vegas, with 58 people killed.
