Papadopoulos Plea Prompts Senate Call To Question Sessions

Senate Democrats have called on Jeff Sessions to clarify just how much he knew about attempts by the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election, following revelations that the attorney general was previously in a meeting with former Trump campaign aide-turned special counsel cooperator George Papadopoulos.

A source familiar with the meeting told Fox News that it "seems clear that the people who remember the conversation believed that Papadopoulos was proposing a prospective idea of using his "Russian contacts" to try to set up a meeting between Trump and Putin, which was immediately rejected by then-Senator Sessions".

Page also divulged that he had told "a few other people" on the campaign that he planned to travel to Moscow in July 2016 to deliver a speech in his capacity as a private citizen.

"Sessions should come back before [the Senate Judiciary Committee]", Schumer said on The Rachel Maddow Show.

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) on Friday slammed Attorney General Jeff Sessions for not telling him the truth during his January confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and again in October during a separate congressional hearing.

"Let's remember that this is about Russian interference in our election and that is at the very heart of our system of democracy and we're trying to find out whether the Trump campaign cooperated", Franken said.

Sessions was present at that meeting, and former campaign adviser J.D. Gordon told The New York Times that Sessions opposed the idea "and he said no one should talk about" the proposed meeting because Sessions did not want the idea associated with the Trump campaign.

The email, dated March 24, 2016, was highlighted Papadopoulos' plea agreement announced Monday. The email went to "several members of the Campaign's foreign policy team", prosecutors alleged. Court documents reveal Papadopoulos exchanging emails with Clovis where they discuss meetings with Russian officials. "As far as Sessions seemed to be concerned, when he shut down this idea of Papadopoulos engaging with Russian Federation, that was the end of it and he moved the meeting along to other issues".

"I missed my one chance".
