21st Century Fox in talks with Disney over potential mega sale

21st Century Fox in talks with Disney over potential mega sale

According to CNBC, 20th Century Fox and Disney have been in discussion about the a deal that would see most of the former sold off to the latter.

The company could not own two broadcast networks and would therefore not buy the Fox broadcast network. Fox is also reportedly hoping to concentrate its focus on news and sports, potentially selling off the greater movie and television elements to a company with a better handle on the rapidly changing face of entertainment media and how audiences consume it. With Fox's entertainment assets, Disney C.E.O.

The move would give Disney control over two of the five highest-grossing film studios in the country.

If the deal ends up going through apparently FOX wants to focus on news and sports, which it feels could compete more effectively. Disney would also acquire such heavyweight franchises as Alien, Predator, Planet of the Apes, Kingsman, Die Hard and, most enticingly, Avatar.

A Disney spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment while Fox was not immediately available for comment.

Even in 1998, it might have seemed inevitable that Disney would someday own at least some of Fox. Disney would also refrain from purchasing the networks local broadcasting affiliates, according to those in the know.

The company would obtain 21st Century's film studio and television channels including FX, FXX, National Geographic along with worldwide stations such as Star and Sky. Yes, the Fox broadcast network would still have plenty of non-sports content, but if their TV studio was included in this sale, they'd have to pick up their scripted programming elsewhere instead of in-house.

Disney has been struggling with subscriber declines at ESPN, its biggest network, and is planning to launch direct-to-consumer video streaming services to reach younger audiences that have shunned traditional cable and satellite offerings.

That's right, comic book movie fans - Disney might be on the verge of bringing the X-Men and Fantastic Four back to Marvel. Disney climbed 1.9% to 100.55.
