Intel pairs with longtime rival AMD to challenge Nvidia

While the AMD collaboration will be the biggest takeaway from this announcement, Intel is keen to point out that its new Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge is at the heart of the design.

Intel's new processor design can reduce silicon footprint by more than 50%. It will also allow for managing temperatures between the chips, which is going to be very important, especially as the laptops this is targeting get thinner.

Computer chip makers Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. have been intense rivals ever since they were each founded in the late 1960s in the earliest days of Silicon Valley, but now the two companies are teaming up to take on a much younger threat: Nvidia Corp. In this case, this collaboration with AMD will enable thinner, lighter and more powerful notebook PCs that are as little as 11mm thick (although Intel contends that 16mm or less is the prime target). This small intelligent bridge allows information to be passed in extremely close proximity while also eliminating various manufacturing and design complexities. The new product, designed by Intel, integrates an Intel® Core™ processor, semi-custom Radeon™ graphics chip, and second generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) into a single package.

Intel will work with AMD on drivers for the Radeon GPU, with AMD writing the initial code and Intel packaging them for users to download.

"Together we are offering gamers and content creators the opportunity to have a thinner-and-lighter PC capable of delivering discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games and content creation applications", AMD president Scott Herkelman adds. The ultimate goal here is to reduce the height of systems that now use Intel Core H-series processors in addition to higher-powered discrete graphics solutions. On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Intel and AMD are joining hands to take on Nvidia in the laptop chip market.

There was no mention on when we can expect to see this chip in laptops, but the partnership between two traditional rivals is noteworthy and should see them combine their talents to produce something truly impressive rather than continue to duke it out in the processor world.

AMD meanwhile has its own integrated CPUs and GPUs known as accelerated processing units (APUs), but again these haven't been able to match the processing power and graphics grunt of an Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU pairing.

More information, including systems from major OEMs based on the technology, is expected in the first quarter of 2018.
