British industrial output jumps in September

British industrial output jumps in September

"Stronger global growth and the effect of the weaker pound seems to be finally showing through in the United Kingdom manufacturing numbers", said ING economist James Smith.

Many economists had earlier forecast 4.2 per cent growth in output compared with an upwardly revised 4.5 per cent year-on-year increase in August.

Industrial and manufacturing output shot up by a monthly 0.7 percent in September, the fastest growth for each sector since December a year ago and above all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists, which pointed to a reading of 0.3 percent for both.

French manufacturing output rose by 0.4% in September and output across the whole of the industry rose by 0.6%.

The mining and quarrying sector rose 2.1 per cent in the three months to September compared with the previous quarter, while total manufacturing and electricity and gas both rose 1.1 per cent.

United Kingdom industrial production is increasing more than expected and the trade deficit is narrowing, a deluge of official figures showed on Friday, with manufacturing activity continues to grow but the construction sector entered a technical recession.

Some important items showing high positive growth during the current month over the same month in previous year include "separators including decanter centrifuge" (117.4%), "bodies of trucks, lorries and trailers" (94.5%), and steroids and hormonal preparations (including anti-fungal preparations). Infrastructure and construction sector goods output increased 0.5 percent.

The visible trade deficit narrowed to GBP 11.25 billion in September from GBP 12.35 billion in the previous month. Economists polled by Reuters had expected 12.8 billion.

Consequently, the estimate for the third quarter sequential decline in construction output was revised down to 0.9% from 0.7%.

The figures reportedly suggest that manufacturing may help to counteract a consumer-led slowdown in the economy.

"However, net trade probably dragged on GDP growth in Q3".
