Iran rejects Macron call for talks on Iranian missiles

Iran rejects Macron call for talks on Iranian missiles

"The very tough positions expressed by Saudi Arabia regarding Iran do not conform to what I think [about Tehran]", Le Monde on Friday quoted Macron as having said during a press conference in Dubai on Thursday. He added, though, that France was committed to the landmark nuclear deal with Iran, which puts restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Iranian Foreign ministry spokesman, Bahram Qassemi, reacted to anti-Iran remarks of French President who was visiting Persian Gulf states of UAE and KSA.

Iran has repeatedly told French officials that the agreement is "not renegotiable and Iran doesn't allow the other sides to annex other issues to it", Qassemi stated.

"France is expected not to be influenced by the wrong assertions and claims of some Persian Gulf [Arab] states against the Islamic Republic of Iran and be realistic and fair and show foresight when considering the developments in the critical region of Middle East", he said.

As many astute pundits have pointed out, it's now "blame Iran time" according to the official Saudi (and allies) narrative of events in order to set the stage for public support for potential military action against Iran. The fate of the deal has fallen on the US Congress which has 60 days to reimpose nuclear sanctions.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to pull out of the deal, refusing to recertify that Iran is complying with its obligations and violating the "spirit" of the accord.

Iran says its missile program is defensive and it has no plans to build nuclear-capable missiles. During his visit to Dubai on Thursday, he referred to a missile which was sacked from Yemen and intercepted by Saudi Arabia earlier this month. Following Trump's move, President Hassan Rouhani stated that Iran "will produce any weapons of any kind that we need and stockpile it and use it at any time to defend ourselves", which in his eyes does not violate any global agreements. "There is no direct link between nuclear and ballistic programs of Iran in the text [of the agreement]", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in October.
