OnePlus 5T costs $499 on November 21: Face unlock, dual cameras

In our short hands-on time with the OnePlus 5T, we found the display to be a noticeable upgrade over the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus' operating system, OxygenOS, offers a refined Android experience that is faster than other Android experiences. Gone is the wide plus short telephoto camera combination and in its place you'll find a 16MP (Sony IMX398) + 20MP (IMX 376K) unit instead. They will allow some select consumers to buy the phone at a discount.

OnePlus 5T launched at a price of Rs 32,999 for 64GB and 8GB RAM version is Rs 37,999. These beta version (OnePlus usually calls them "Community Builds") will be available for download, but you'll need to flash them manually. This device has a large 6.01-inch 18:9 Optic AMOLED display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution of 2160×1080 pixels.

To accomodate bigger screen, OnePlus has moved the fingerprint sensor at the back.

Should OnePlus 5 users consider an upgrade?

The much awaited OnePlus 5T is now official. If you purchased the OnePlus 5 then you're someone who already spent between $500-$560 on a new device in just the last five to six months, and with the OnePlus 5T launching next week you'll be looking at another $500-$560 as it will come to market for $499 or $559 depending on whether or not you choose the 64GB model or the 128GB model. The phone unlocks as soon as it is anywhere near the face and there is hardly any delay. The OnePlus 5T has a face unlock feature which works using the front camera.

Battery Even with its svelte chassis at 7.3mm thin, the OnePlus 5T is accompanied with a 3,300 mAh non-removeable battery. There is no IP67/IP68 water resistance, for example, and there's also no stereo (or even earpiece stereo) speaker setup.

Look, I'm not here to trash the OnePlus 5T. Also, with OnePlus 5T going bezel-less, this is now a clear trend across the smartphone segment and is likely to become the standard in the coming year. Users will also be able to swap buttons and customise their icons. It has fingerprint reader on its rear panel and also comes with a new Face Unlock feature that can unlock your device in just 0.1 second. "Users can calibrate their screens based on their viewing preferences across four different modes, including default, sRGB, DCI-P3 and adaptive", said OnePlus in a product note for its new phone. This should, at least in theory, enable the camera to perform better in low-light conditions.

Underneath the hood, the OnePlus 5T packs the same Snapdragon 835 processor, along with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which are the exact same specs on the OnePlus 5. But it is in the rear camera, where the company has changed a few bits. First and foremost, the most noticeable change between the two phones is the display as this will be the first thing you see when you open the box.

There are a handful of quality of life improvements with the OnePlus 5T, which runs the company's own skin of Android, known as Oxygen OS. OxygenOS's support for fingerprint gestures lets you swipe down to pull down the notification shade, and long press while inside the camera app to take a photo.
