Red Wings defenseman Witkowski handed 10-game ban after brawl

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Calgary Flames 8-2 Wednesday night, but the fireworks late in the third period were all anyone could talk about afterwards. Witkowski proceeded to turn around and charge back out onto the ice, where a scrum and fight followed.

Witkowski is in his first season as a member of the Red Wings, having appeared in just eight games.

Should the 10-game suspension be upheld, Witkowski will not be eligible to return until December 11 when the Red Wings welcome in the Florida Panthers.

"That's what I like to call old-time hockey", Witkowski said after the game to the Associated Press.

The brawl broke out in the third period when Calgary's Matthew Tkachuk smacked Witkowski on the back of the leg with his stick as he was exiting the penalty box and making his way towards the Red Wings bench to leave the game. Following the brawl against Calgary, he has already matched his penalty minutes total from last season with 39, which he totaled across 34 games.

Red Wings player says he wasn't aware of mandatory suspension for jumping over the boards to take part in a fight. "But rule doesn't give dept. any ability to apply judgment". Just do something pretty stupid that kind of started everything. "I think it's good for the game".

"He was just looking for an excuse to come back".

The Red Wings coach continued with a comment about the Red Wings missing the playoffs last year for the first time in 25 years.

"Nobody wants to sit out 10 games", Witkowski said bluntly.
