Worst times for metro Detroit drivers to travel for Thanksgiving

TAMPA — Thanksgiving is predicted to bring out the highest number of travelers since 2005. The organization said a strengthening economy and consumer confidence have prompted Americans to be willing to spend more on travel.

Higher gas prices won't stop Floridians from hitting the road this Thanksgiving. Auto rental rates are also at their highest levels in four years, and the average cost of a hotel room is up almost 15 percent.

Experts say the busiest travel time is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday following the holiday, with the lightest traffic typically in the morning on Thanksgiving Day. It was higher at $2.56 a gallon a month ago, but lower at $2.18 a gallon previous year at Thanksgiving.

AAA says it would be the eighth consecutive year of growth for Thanksgiving travel in MI.

In Florida, 190,720 are expected to take a flight, a 4.5 percent over a year ago, AAA said.

Nearly 86 percent of local travelers - 3.3 million - will be going by vehicle to their destinations, a 3.5 percent increase from last year's 3.2 million auto travelers.

Travelers can expect to spend any "flight savings" on auto rentals.

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend travel by Wilkes-Barre area residents represents a 3.5 percent increase over 2016.

Compared to last year's holiday, it will cost the average motorist $6 more for a full tank of gasoline.

The vast majority-nearly 90 percent-of MI holiday travelers will drive this Thanksgiving. The average price increased by 14 percent to $176/night. Conversely, the average rate for a AAA Two Diamond Rated hotel has decreased 5 percent to an average nightly rate of $117.

Thanksgiving travel has steadily rebounded from the post-recession low in 2008, AAA said. Learn more at AAA.com/mobile.
