George Clooney returning to TV with adaptation of 'Catch-22'

Nearly twenty years since Clooney departed ER, the Hollywood A-lister is attached to star in and direct the project for Paramount Television and Anonymous Content, according to Deadline. According to The Hollywood Reporter he will direct and star in a Paramount produced limited series based on Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22.

Clooney will play World War Two commanding officer Colonel Cathcart in the proposed TV event, who repeatedly refuses the appeals of a U.S. airforce soldier determined to get back home.

More than two decades after his breakout role in ER, George Clooney is returning to television.

"Catch-22" was previously adapted into a film in 1970 starring Alan Arkin as Yossarian and Martin Balsam as Cathcart. People who were mentally unfit were not obliged to fly missions, but those who applied to stop flying were said to be showing a rational concern for his safety and were therefore sane and had to fly.

Luke Davies (Lion) and David Michôd (The Rover) will pen the script, and Clooney's producing partner, Grant Heslov (Argo), will also direct a few episodes.

Catch-22 is the first acting gig for George in quite some time, as his last significant appearance was in 2016's Money Monster.

Clooney will star in the role of Colonel Cathcart.

Yossarian's only way to avoid the missions is to declare insanity, but the only way to prove insanity is a willingness to embark on unsafe missions, thus creating the novel's absurd Catch-22.

Clooney and Heslov are repped by CAA.
