Watch President Trump pardon the 2017 National Thanksgiving Turkey

- In a tradition we might have trouble explaining to foreigners, every November the President of the United States pardons a turkey.

Mr Trump praised the turkey he was pardoning, Drumstick, as a "big bird" and played up its hopes for the years to come.

"As many of you know, I have been very active in overturning a number of executive actions by my predecessor", Trump quipped.

But one person shouted out something from the crowd that really sparked interest.

Wishbone and Drumstick were both raised on a Minnesota turkey farm, and though Drumstick won the online White House poll, in actuality, both will go on to live at "Gobbler's Rest", on the campus of Virginia Tech, where other pardoned birds have resided. However, I have been informed by the White House councils office that Tater and Tot pardons can not under any circumstances be revoked'.

They were put on a flight home after Trump spoke with the president.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday pardoned a turkey named Drumstick and jokingly bemoaned that his lawyers wouldn't let him overturn the clemency former President Barack Obama granted to a pair of birds named Tater and Tot ahead of Thanksgiving a year ago.

President Donald Trump will be giving two pardons on Tuesday - and this time it won't involve a controversial figure like former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"36 pounds! Are you ready, Drumstick?" he remarked, before asking if he could touch the bird. "Tater and Tot, you can rest easy".

It's the 70th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey tradition. It faded under Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, but George H.W. Bush brought it back in 1989.
