Chiefs sign Darrelle Revis, in desperate hope he has something left

In a surprise move, the Chiefs announced Wednesday that they have signed veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis to their active roster.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports that the deal is for two years, with Revis to receive the league minimum in 2017 and no guaranteed money in 2018. Many believed his contract would have to match the Jets dead cap to bring him back to the game, but it seems as if the love for the game is bringing Revis back for at least one more year.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the team has been in contact with Revis for a while and that last year's wrist injury was the reason a deal wasn't done sooner. Since then their pass defense, which ranked 18th was average as a unit in 2016, has fallen to 28th this season.

"Darrelle is a proven player in this league and we are excited to add him to our secondary", Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement. "He's had a Hall-of-Fame career and his leadership and playing experience will be valuable to our defense". His career numbers include 485 tackles (401 solo), 2.0 sacks, 137 passes defensed, 29 interceptions, six forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries. "I would think his role would be to step in and be a starter". Revis also won Super Bowl XLIX with the Patriots.

There weren't any recent rumors circulating about teams having interest in signing Revis, so this comes as a surprise the day before Thanksgiving.
