International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The video 'Leave No One Behind' was launched Friday in support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Nov. 25. According to the United Nations, violence against women and girls across most countries include physical, sexual and psychological forms.

UNiTE leads the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which aims to raise public awareness and mobilize people everywhere to bring about change.

"While our society has made great advances towards recognizing women's rights and achieving gender equality, we can not stop until we have put an end to gender-based violence once and for all".

The campaign urges governments, development partners and civil societies to address the structural causes of inequality and marginalization that affect women, girls and the marginalized in general.

It is now widely recognized that violence against women, including harassment and harmful practices, is a major barrier to women and girls enjoying their fundamental human rights, and is a direct challenge to women's inclusion and participation in sustaining peace. To mark the important day, the United Nations published worrisome data that revealed just how widespread a phenomenon violence against women is around the world.

"Sexual violence and harassment against women is prevalent in our society". The goal of this day is to call for global action on the cause of eliminating violence by achieving gender equality and the full empowerment of women.

In 2012, nearly half of all women who were victims of intentional homicide worldwide were killed by an intimate partner or family member, compared to 6% of male victims.

25 Nov is the International Day to End Violence against Women!

The Centre passerelle pour femmes (CPF), Tranquility House and Timmins and Area Women in Crisis (TAWC) have come together to launch an interactive social media campaign on Facebook at "16 days of Activism 16 jours d'activisme".

The groups recommend five steps health care workers can take respond to and help prevent violence against women. "When we talk about leaving no one behind, we want to identify all these different forms of violence that women experience".

Orange is the official colour of the campaign, which is why various capitals around the world express their solidarity by lighting their main buildings in orange.
