Israeli Court Bans Uber Taxi App Over Lack of Insurance for Drivers

Tel Aviv: An Israeli court has ordered global ride-hailing app Uber to stop two of its services here in the absence of proper travel insurance.

Last week, Uber said hackers compromised personal data from some 57 million riders and drivers worldwide in a breach kept hidden for a year.

While Judge Eitan Orenstein ruled that Uber would have to halt its UberDAY and UberNIGHT ride-sharing services, it can continue with its regular taxi service, which is licensed and insured.

Tens of thousands of people have reportedly used the service in Israel since its launch, however an anonymous "source at the Transportation Ministry" declared that anyone "boarding an Uber auto is a criminal - both driver and passenger". "They take drivers who have not had training and official tests".

Globes reports "At the beginning of November, Uber Israel began operating its UberDAY ridesharing service in Tel Aviv and the neighboring cities of Ramat Gan and Givatayim with journeys undertaken to Herzliya in the north and Bat Yam in the south. We're committed to continued cooperation with the authorities, to examine how technology can provide reliable, cost-effective and safe transportation solutions".

The lawsuit was brought by the Association of Taxi Drivers and rival online taxi operator Gett. The court was addressing a lawsuit filed by the Transportation Ministry, which was of the opinion Uber was operating illegally in Israel.

In the face of criticism of the legality of its operations earlier this month, Uber Israel CEO Yoni Greifman said that the existing legislation was outdated.
