Navajo Nation President on Trump's 'Pocahontas' Quip: 'Inappropriate' to Use 'Racial Slur'

Navajo Nation President on Trump's 'Pocahontas' Quip: 'Inappropriate' to Use 'Racial Slur'

President Trump began a media firestorm Monday after referring to Elizabeth Warren as "Pocahontas" at a ceremony honoring Navajo code talkers.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye explained to CNN that the way the term was used would be characterized as an ethnic slur, and he said it "doesn't belong in the room when our war heroes are being honored".

Mr Trump was referring to Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren, who controversially claimed Cherokee and Delaware Indian heritage in 2012 despite having no documentation proving it.

Look, is it amusing that Warren once claimed Native American heritage? "Look, I can explain it to them, but it's real time-consuming, and I have a lot of other stuff to do", she said. "I like you, because you are special".

Ms Warren was first called Pocahontas by Donald Trump in May 2016, when he was running for office.

Faith Spotted Eagle, a prominent Native American activist, said that the use of the word in that setting amounted to "emotional assault" that "carries as much weight as a physical assault", according to a reporter for the Toronto Star.

"Although, we have a representative in Congress who has been here a long time - longer than you".

"President Trump couldn't even make it through a ceremony to honor these men without throwing in a racial slur", Warren told Anderson Cooper.

On Monday, several Navajo Code Talkers were invited to the White House for a recognition ceremony tied to Native American Heritage Month. "He did this because he thinks that he can bully me and shut me up".

In closing, the Caucasian said that accusing Trump of intentionally offending the Navajos was absurd.

Turning to the veterans, Trump said "but do you know what?"

The statement goes on to encourage the focus to remain on the Code Talkers and their contributions to defending the United States. "It is not going to work in the future". "This is a young lady, a Native American woman that played a critical role in the life of this nation, and to use that person in that way is unnecessary and is being culturally insensitive".
