There were a total of 38,947 rapes in 2016, compared to 34,651 in 2015.

The NCRB has also introduced several new sections to its annual Crime in India report this year; publishing data on 19 metropolitan cities with a population of over 2 million, data on missing persons & children, Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), and arms seizure. UP is also national leader when it came to crimes against women- 49,262 cases or 14.5% were reported in the state.

A total of 32 people also died or disappeared in the country previous year while they were under the remand of the police. Though the youngest state in the country stands 11th among all the states in terms of number of cases registered, the crime rate is still very high as indicated by the sixth position it occupies.

"The state Government has resolved to deal sternly with such cases and to protect women", Sarang said. However, policing still left a lot to be desired, they added. The year 2014 saw 66,042 incident of riots whereas it decreased by a small 1.2% in 2015 to 65,255 cases. The police blame the women in most cases, especially in cases of domestic violence.

The crime rate in Maharashtra has increased marginally from 355.19 crimes per 1 lakh citizens registered in 2015 to 357.41 crimes per 1 lakh citizens in 2016.

While CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) had, in August this year, issued 21 advisories to safeguard points of sale, micro ATMs, electronic wallets, online banking, smartphones, unified payments interface, SIM cards, wireless access routers and Aadhaar-enabled payment systems, the home ministry also said that it was working to safeguard the country's cyber systems.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of IPC crimes at 9.5 per cent, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 8.9 per cent, Maharashtra at 8.8 per cent, and Kerala at 8.7 per cent.

Maharashtra's Superintendent of Police (SP), Cyber, Balsingh Rajput said the awareness among people in Maharashtra is good.

The NCRB data also pointed to a rise in crimes against children, with Uttar Pradesh topping this list too, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Agencies such as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) seized 350,000kg of contraband substances in 2016.
