Martin Shkreli: Government Requests Wu-Tang Clan Album Forfeiture

The letter identifies specific assets to be forfeited, including the famous "Once Upon a Time In Shaolin", the only extant copy of a Wu Tang Clan album Shkreli purchases and famously bragged about on social media.

Martin Shkreli might have to forfeit his one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang album "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin". A Brooklyn jury deliberated five days before finding Shkreli guilty on Friday on three of eight counts.

Shkreli's attorney told the Washington Post in a statement that he would oppose the forfeiture claim: "Our position is clear".

The Wu-Tang album authorities are trying to get him to handover was actually sold back in September for $1M on eBay, half of what he actually acquired it for.

The U.S. government has a sudden, strong interest in rare rap music - strong enough to try and seize two albums from "Pharma Bro" and convicted fraudster Martin Shkreli. "Accordingly, forfeiture of any assets is not an appropriate remedy", Brafman said.

Among the assets the Federal Bureau of Investigation proposed seizing are "the album "Once Upon A Time in Shaolin" by the Wu Tang Clan, as well as any proceeds derived from the sale of such album; the album "Tha Carter V" by Lil Wayne, as well as any proceeds derived from the sale of such album".

Shkreli spent months a year ago, in the lead-up to his criminal trial, in a unusual game of cat-and-mouse with Lil Wayne to acquire the album.

Prosecutors listed out assets that they can possibly take from Shkreli, also including his stake in Turing Pharmaceuticals and an Enigma machine, which was used in World War II as a code breaker.

The forfeiture demand comes in what are possibly the last days of a trial for Shkreli's former lawyer, Evan Greebel, who prosecutors say conspired with Shkreli in the securities fraud.

Docket records show that Shkreli's attorney Benjamin Brafman has until December 18 to file a response to the government's request.
