Giancarlo Stanton prefers Giants over Cardinals

Giancarlo Stanton prefers Giants over Cardinals

The Marlins have arranged possible trades of Giancarlo Stanton with the Cardinals and Giants.

Not that it would matter.

Representatives for the reigning National League MVP met with the Giants and Cardinals late in the week, as each team attempted to convince Stanton to waive his no-trade clause and pave the way for a blockbuster deal.

Yet Stanton might be waiting for a resolution with the Dodgers before deciding between the Giants and Cardinals.

Sirius XM's Craig Miss reported on Thursday night that the San Francisco Giants were meeting with Stanton's agents in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers' president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, is monitoring the Stanton talks with other teams and is aware that an opportunity might emerge over time, according to ESPN.

But the Dodgers, who paid $113.5 million in competitive balance tax penalties from 2013-16 and are estimated to pay more than $30 million this season, might be hesitant to commit to Stanton, who has $295 million and 10 years remaining on his contract.

As of Sunday, the Dodgers and Marlins were still in contact regarding Stanton, but have not made progress toward a deal, according to one source.

The Marlins are reportedly only willing to pick up $45 million of Stanton's contract to make the deal work.

Stanton, 28, has no desire to be part of a rebuilding process, which the Marlins will be entering under new ownership, featuring point man Derek Jeter.

The Marlins also want to move Dee Gordon, who's owed $38 million through 2020, and the second baseman would be a nice fit for the Giants, who lack speed.
