Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson among Heisman finalists

Entering bowl season, Jackson is closing in on the numbers he put up in 2016, when he won the Heisman.

Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy victor, edged out Stanford running back Bryce Love to finish in second place.

"I'm so proud of Lamar for what he's accomplished on the field and off", head coach Bobby Petrino said in a news release from U of L. He's the ultimate competitor and victor, and is one of the greatest young men I've ever had the pleasure to coach.

Jackson is in rare company, as he has a chance to be the second repeat victor of the Heisman Trophy. It's the second straight year for Mayfield to be named a finalist.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield leads three players revealed on Monday as finalists for the 2017 Heisman Trophy.

Stanford running back Bryce Love will likely be the runner-up.

From his game early in the season at Ohio State to his performance in the Big 12 Championship, Mayfield has been one of the frontrunners for the award.

Big names like Saquon Barkley, J.T. Barrett and Rashaad Penny all had great seasons, but they were unable to get an exclusive ticket to New York City.

Including his 125 yards in the Pac-12 title game against USC, the junior came through with 1,973 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, showcasing his ability as arguably the best pure runner in the nation. The Sooners will be playing in its second College Football Playoff with Mayfield in the 'gun.

Jackson also leads the NCAA in total offense per game (411.0 total yards per game), total yards (4,932) and is tied for third in total touchdowns (42).

"It's a pleasure to welcome these three outstanding players to NY for the Heisman Trophy ceremony", said Rob Whalen, Executive Director of the Heisman Trophy Trust.
