Conyers retires amid firestorm of sexual harassment allegations from several women

When asked if Congress should "open the books" and share the names of all the members who are responsible for $7 million in sexual harassment lawsuits paid, Conyers said, "My answer is a strong, unequivocal, yes".

Last week, Marion Brown, a woman with whom Conyers had settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2005, appeared on NBC's "Today" show and said Conyers had "violated" her body, propositioned her for sex and touched her inappropriately.

Ian Conyers, the grandson of the Michigan Democrat's brother, told The New York Times he plans on announcing that he will not return to the House of Representatives after his term ends in 2018, mentioning his health as the reason for retiring. He said he plans to run for John Conyers' seat in Washington, D.C.

Besieged by allegations of sexual harassment, Democratic Rep. John Conyers resigned from Congress on Tuesday, bringing an abrupt end to the civil rights leader's almost 53-year career on Capitol Hill.

Conyers first was elected to the U.S. House in 1964.

The rally comes at a time when Conyers is expected to make a decision about whether he will stay in Congress amid the allegations. A few days later, she finally stated she believed Conyers should resign.

On Monday, yet another allegation was lodged against Conyers, when a woman who said she worked for the congressman for more than a decade, Elisa Grubbs, said he slid his hand up her skirt and rubbed her thighs while she was sitting next to him in the front row of a church.

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we are going through now", Conyers said.

He continued to deny that he has harassed any of his former employees and said he did not know where the allegations came from.

John Conyers returned to Detroit from Washington last week and was hospitalized on Wednesday after complaining that he felt light-headed. The 88-year-old Democrat is the longest-serving current House member.

The House Ethics Committee - with authority to recommend any action up to expulsion - had launched an investigation against Conyers, but that was nullified once he left office on Tuesday.

Conyers also endorsed his son, John Conyers III, to replace him in office.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dug herself into a hole when she defended Conyers on Meet The Press. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, and Sen.

Conyers is one of four sitting United States lawmakers hit by allegations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the claims targeting movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which triggered a torrent of accusations against powerful figures in the worlds of entertainment, media and politics.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers. The committee's website lists Conyers still as a member.
