Ravens CB Jimmy Smith Suspended Four Games for PED Violation

Ravens CB Jimmy Smith Suspended Four Games for PED Violation

If he attempts to continue to fight it throughout the course of the season, he could possibly run the risk of having to serve that suspension at the start of next season, when he may be healthy, though given the lateness in the season of his Achilles injury, that is no guarantee, either. Like Smith, he was able to serve his suspension while on IR. Dixon had an additional two games tacked onto his suspension in September for a violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has confirmed that Smith tore his Achilles tendon during their 44-20 win over the Detroit Lions this past Sunday and he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Still, the suspension will reportedly cost him $182,325. Smith would have lost $2 million if he hadn't restructured his deal in August.

Smith had 28 tackles and three interceptions this season for Baltimore, who lead the National Football League with 20 interceptions.

Smith's season ended in the second quarter Sunday, when he fell to the ground while trying to cover a deep route.

Injuries have consistently hampered Smith's career. Smith would then have been eligible for the postseason if Baltimore made the playoffs. He's appeared in all 16 regular season games only twice; previous year, he was placed on injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 14. Smith will miss a total of 17 games over the past four seasons.

The Ravens (7-5) are now chasing the Pittsburgh Steelers (9-2) in the AFC North.

Rookie first-round pick Marlon Humphrey will replace Smith in the starting lineup when Baltimore plays at AFC North-leading Pittsburgh this Sunday night.
