Trump tries to block Mitt Romney from becoming Utah senator

Trump's coziness with Orrin Hatch and the senator's refusal to rule out a re-election bid is frustrating Romney allies, who want the former Never Trump leader to go to Washington D.C. Orrin Grant Hatch to seek re-election.

Asked if he was sending a message to Mitt Romney that he doesn't want him to run for Hatch's seat, Trump paused and then said, "He's a good man. Mitt's a good man", according to a pool report.

Kirk Jowers, a friend of Romney who served as the chairman and general counsel of his political action committee, told Politico that while "Hatch is a known entity for Trump and has been really goof for the president", the 2012 GOP presidential nominee is more of an unknown.

"There's widespread concern within the White House that Romney in the Senate could make Trump's life hard", reported Politico's Alex Isenstadt, noting Romney's vociferous condemnations of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Privately, he said he would prioritize stopping Romney, even if it meant backing Hatch, who entered the Senate in 1977.

Romney has been preparing to run for Hatch's seat on the long-held assumption that the 83-year-old would retire, according to Politico. But suddenly backed by Trump, Hatch seems to be leaning in another direction.

Trump has mostly tried to sway Hatch behind the scenes.

Hatch spokesman Matthew Whitlock said "the senator appreciates the president's support and plans to make a decision on whether or not to run again by the end of the year". Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch. "His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University", Romney said. Rex Tillerson. Perhaps as a reaction to that particular humiliation, Romney has carried on his criticism of Trump, saying that the White House's response to the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville "caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn", and bashing Trump for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement.

"I've gotten to know a lot of people very well", the president said in introductory remarks focused on Hatch during a Salt Lake City speech about national monuments.
