Various Wii games getting 1080p Nvidia Shield releases in China

Through a licensing deal with Nvidia, Nintendo is bringing major Wii and GameCube games to Android.

While Nintendo Switch owners patiently wait for signs that the company will bring its traditional Virtual Console to the platform, Nvidia Shield users will be getting treated to a selection of Wii titles.

Analyst Daniel Ahmad noted on Twitter that the Shield will cost 1499 Yuan ($226) and games will run 68 Yuan ($10).

It's also unclear if or when those Nintendo games will be supported on Nvidia's devices outside of China. But while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have gone on sale in China, the Nintendo Switch has yet to hit store shelves. The confirmed games, Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros.

All communications between Nintendo and Nvidia showed that the update to Shield is specifically targeted for China. The Nvidia Shield has so much untapped power that simplistic Android games which may push an Adreno GPU will generally run very well on the Nvidia Kepler GPU that is in the Tegra SoC. In 2003, the company partnered with iQue, a home electronics maker that developed a device capable of bypassing the legislation that banned console games.

Speaking to Engadget, Nvidia has revealed that Nintendo will release remastered versions of New Super Mario Bros.

With the Chinese market being quite peculiar due to the regulations for game consoles, it's likely that these games may not be released in other regions. The announcement notes more games are on the way, including Super Mario Galaxy. Just look at Kellogg's Super Mario Cereal.

Nintendo, an over 100-year-old Japanese game company, has worked around China's restrictions in the past by partnering with a Chinese company named iQue.
