Students hid in classrooms during shooting that left 3 dead

At least three people have been killed in a shooting early Thursday morning at Aztec High School in Colorado. No other injuries were reported, and it was not clear if the shooter died by suicide or was killed by police.

San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen told reporters that three people believed to be students died Thursday at Aztec High School.

The families of the victims have been notified and none of the dead have yet been identified, the Farmington Daily Times reported.

Arrangements have been made for parents to pick up students at a nearby location.

The shooting took place at Aztec High School in Aztec, about 180 miles northwest of Albuquerque.

The New Mexico State Police were taking over the investigation.

Officials posted on Facebook shortly before 9 a.m. that the school is being evacuated.

Another news outlet reports that calls to Aztec police, the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, and other law enforcement agencies have not been immediately returned. Other schools in the area were also locked down, and authorities were setting up staging areas where parents could gather and wait for more information.
