Now you can tell Facebook to ignore your face

Facebook will use facial recognition to spot you in photos you haven't already been tagged in, as the social network attempts to fend off concerns about user privacy being overlooked.

It builds on the existing machine learning and AI that powers another of Facebook's photo features, tagging suggestions.

If you're in someone's profile photo which is always public, you'll always be notified. However, Facebook notes that if your tag suggestions setting is now set to "none", then your default face recognition setting will be set to "off" and will remain that way until you decide to change it. Given that potential creepiness, and our longstanding interest in how People You May Know actually works, a Facebook spokesperson pre-emptively sent us a note about the facial recognition tool.

You'll now get notifications if you're present in a photo uploaded to Facebook, but not tagged in that photo. But computers are getting better at recognizing us, and now Facebook has made a decision to use that to spot photos you're not tagged in. The objective of the scanning, according to Facebook, is to alert you if someone has publicly uploaded a photo of you that you don't know about, especially if they are trying to impersonate you. "When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template". Soon, you will begin to see a simple on/off switch instead of settings for individual features that use face recognition technology.

In conjunction with the new facial recognition tools, Facebook put out another post in its "Hard Questions" series.

While now able to identify most users in head-on photos, the technology won't recognise people whose faces are obscured, in shadow or at unusual angles.

Facebook also introduced new tools to try to prevent harassment Tuesday.

In the coming weeks, Facebook may tell you that someone you don't know has uploaded a photo of you.

Facial recognition may make the world safer, or more authoritarian, or just weirder - depending on your perspective.

Facebook says the feature is rolling out now, except in Canada and the EU.

"If someone is being harassed, blocking the abuser sometimes prompts additional harassment, particularly offline", Davis wrote.
