Damian Green Was Fired by Theresa May For Lying, Jeremy Hunt Acknowledges

Damian Green, Britain's First Secretary of State and effective Deputy Prime Minister, resigned Wednesday after an investigation found he misled police about the presence of pornography on his office computer, according to multiple media reports.

May accepted the resignation of First Secretary of State Damian Green, her right-hand man and an old friend, in a letter, with what she called "deep regret", adding that she was "extremely sad".

In his reply, Mr Green maintained he never viewed or downloaded porn on his Commons computer.

Conservative MPs are angry about the alleged actions of the two retired detectives, with Jeremy Hunt claiming they "did not sit comfortably in a democracy", something, he added, Theresa May "had made clear" in her letter to Mr Green. The Prime Minister said she expected a proper investigation into claims that information was leaked by a former senior officer.

A key ally of British Prime Minister Theresa May was forced to resign after an investigation concluded he made misleading statements about pornographic images found on a Parliament computer in his office in 2008.

"I apologise that my statements were misleading on this point", he said.

The Cabinet Office investigation did not rule on allegations made by writer Kate Maltby that Mr Green sexually harassed her.

Asked if his departure left Theresa May more isolated, Mr Hunt said "leadership is lonely" but she had shown "extraordinary resilience in very challenging circumstances".

Mr Green also said he deeply regretted causing distress to Ms Maltby.

She wrote in an article for The Times in November that Green touched her knee "fleetingly" in a London pub in 2015, when the two were meeting to discuss the possibility of a future career for her in politics.

Ms Maltby is not commenting on Mr Green's resignation until she receives more details from the Cabinet Office.

Mr Green, 61, MP for Ashford since 1997, is the third minister in Mrs May's cabinet to resign in just two months, following the exits of Sir Michael Fallon and Priti Patel.

Mr Hunt continued: "He lied on a particular incident, yes, I think lots of people who understand the context would appreciate why that might have happened but that doesn't make it any Cabinet ministers to the very highest standards of conduct, rightly, but I think we should remember that those are standards that would probably not apply in many other countries".
