OPD Doctors on 12-Hour Strike Against National Medical Commission Bill

OPD Doctors on 12-Hour Strike Against National Medical Commission Bill

He said The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the bill and has appealed to the prime minister to revise it in the larger interest of the medical profession.

Aiming to ensure transparency, the bill also seeks to allow practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, to practice modern medicine once they complete a short-term "bridge" course.

After the new bill, private colleges will no longer need permission to increase number of seats in undergraduate and postgraduate seats as they would be able do that on their own.

The Delhi Medical Association is supporting the IMA's protest and has called on private and corporate hospitals in the national capital to keep their OPD services closed.

However, Apollo Hospital and Kalinga Hospital here haven't joined the strike, sources said.

The bill also allows private colleges to decide fee for 60 per cent of the seats; it is 15 per cent now. The doctor's strike has held against the new proposal of National Commission Bill.

The Bill is aimed at bringing reforms in the medical education sector which has been under scrutiny for corruption and unethical practices, a senior health ministry official said. Indian Medical Council has also agreed to the provisions of National Medical Commission bill 2017. The protests come as the Bill is set to be taken up for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday. 'No to NMC (National Medical Commission)' is a slogan for medical community as well as every patient. "Secondly, the NMC will make medical education another fertile ground for bureaucratic red tapism".

An IMA statement read: "The NMC in the present form is not acceptable".

There is also a strong resentment against the examination that will be conducted by the NMC for medical students after completion of the course to be eligible as practising doctors.

The commission will have a government-nominated chairman and members, and the board members will be selected by a search committee under the Cabinet Secretary, it says.
