Outage at Customs and Border Protection leads to long lines at airports

Travellers who were at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in NY and Miami International Airport in Florida took to social media to share photographs of long queues at the airports.

"No one has been getting past JFK Airport immigration for the last hour". DFW International was one of the airports affected.

DFW travelers told NBC5 they had very little information about what was happening and hundreds of people backed up in line while the computer systems were down.

"The kiosk machines shut down", Martin said. "So it was pretty terrible just not to know what was happening".

Customs and Border Protection began the new year with a computer outage that caused long lines at several airports. All airports are now back online.

Customs officers still had security to national security databases, Garbis said.

"CBP took immediate action to address the technology disruption", the CBP added. "At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature", Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Jennifer Gabris said in the statement.

Customs says that passengers continued to be processed during the outage, "using alternative procedures at affected airports".

Travelers entering the U.S. have been growing increasingly frustrated at long security queues as immigration desk computers at various United States airports shut down for about two hours on Monday, media reports have said.
