22 injured in 7-alarm Bronx fire

At least 16 people were injured Tuesday when fire raced through a Bronx apartment building, just five days after a blaze at another building in the Bronx left 12 people dead.

The Fire Department of NY says 23 people, including a firefighter, are hurt following a Bronx blaze.

"Children starting fires is not rare", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said on Friday, adding that the stairway "acted like a chimney".

Adults and children fled from the three stories of apartments above, including a man who ran outside with no shirt and no shoes.

More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze. "Now 16 non life-threatening injuries have been reported", read a tweet on the official Twitter handle of the department.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known.

The fire went to six alarms and dozens of fire vehicles were on scene as thick smoke poured out of the building and flames were through the roof. The blaze began at about 5:30 a.m.at 1547 Commonwealth Ave.in the Van Nest neighborhood of the Bronx.

On Thursday, 12 people, including children, died in a fast-moving fire in the Bronx, also near the zoo. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it the worst fire tragedy the city has seen in a quarter century. It was not clear when it would be habitable again.
