USA longest-serving Republican senator to retire

"Every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves". But Hatch, who emerged as one of the presidents most avid loyalists in the Senate, chose to retire after discussing the matter with his family over the holidays.

His terms ends about a year from now.

The longest-serving Senate Republican with seven terms under his belt, he was first elected in 1976. And the president used a speech in Salt Lake City to say that he hoped Mr. Hatch would "continue to serve your state and your country in the Senate for a very long time to come". Asked if he thought Romney would be interested in coming to Washington during the Trump era, Trump replied, "I don't know".

"It would be hard to defeat Mitt Romney if he were running here", said David Hansen, a longtime Utah Republican strategist and chairman of Mr. Hatch's political organization. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, would likely reclaim his seniority on the Finance Committee and give up the gavel at the Judiciary Committee. He also is president pro tempore of the Senate, which is in the presidential line of succession. If Republicans hold the majority, Sens.

In Utah, the legislature changed the rules for nomination in 2014, as part of a backlash against state Republican Party's decision to deny the nomination to incumbent Republican Sen.

Sen. Mike Lee, Hatch's counterpart from the state, said that Hatch would be "sorely missed".

Under the new rules, Republican nominees do not need to depend on attendees at the state convention to get on the ballot.

No matter who will replace Hatch, his decision to retire has broader implications, given his chairmanship of the important Finance committee and his seniority on other committees. "There is no question he can buy his way onto the ballot".

Romney, the former MA governor who now lives in Utah, thanked Hatch in a statement on Facebook and said Hatch "has represented the interests of Utah with distinction and honor".

After the election, Romney submitted himself as a candidate to be secretary of state in an excruciatingly public interview process.

"It would be hard to defeat Mitt Romney if he were running here", said David Hansen, a longtime Utah Republican strategist and chairman of Hatchs political organization. As I have noted before, Romney and Breitbart News were very friendly in 2012, when the former MA governor was the GOP presidential nominee.

Romney broke his silence on Facebook moments after Hatch's announcement, congratulating the retiring senator, listing his credentials and saying he and his wife wish them "all the best in their future endeavors".
