Bomb cyclone? What's next for Eastern Canada's brutally cold winter

The storm in question, which will impact coastal areas from Georgia to ME, is given its extreme name because of the predicted rapid pressure drop, an indication of the storm's strength. The storm is expected to take shape off the coast of Florida late on January 3, according to the Washington Post, intensifying as it hits the Mid-Atlantic and eastern New England regions.

The incoming storm has prompted fears of damage and power outages, with New Brunswick contracting extra crews to be on hand in case of emergency. "The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system is a process called bombogenesis, which creates what is known as a bomb cyclone". We may only see some flurries to possibly 2 inches of accumulation from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. In Charleston, South Carolina, one to three inches of snow and sleet are expected. But brutal temperatures will more than make up for the lack of snow: highs in the single digits and winds up to 21 miles per hour are expected Friday and Saturday. FOX 5's Mike Thomas goes into more detail here. However, if the storm heads east and out into seas, the amount of snow will decrease and wind speeds will die down. Throughout eastern MA and eastern ME, the combination of wind and snow could create blizzard conditions, especially if the storm wobbles west. Wicked cold air sourced from Siberia, the North Pole and Greenland will all converge on the region.

This East Coast storm will move fast & deepen very rapidly.

Causing an average snowstorm to morph into one with hurricane-force winds.

The Red Cross has an entire section of its website dedicated to winter storm preparation, including before, during, and after the storm. @NWS offices are monitoring the subtle track changes that can have big impacts. A millibar measures atmospheric pressure. Mid-Atlantic and Northeast cities are going to set records for cold temperatures on January 5, with single-digits (and subzero cold) freezing New England on January 6.

Cars spun out of control on icy overpasses from Texas to Georgia, while the water park at Disney World and other Florida theme parks were closed because of the unusually cold temperatures, adding to the misery of a long cold snap across America. With places like Tallahassee, Florida seeing snow for the first time in 28 years, it's safe to say that everyone on the East Coast should stay indoors for the next couple of days. What, exactly, is a "bomb cyclone" and what should you expect on Thursday?
