SpaceX targeting late January for Falcon Heavy debut

SpaceX targeting late January for Falcon Heavy debut

Falcon 9 is part of Musk's attempts to slash launch costs and shorten intervals between launches. SpaceX also announced plans to fly a Crew Dragon spacecraft, carrying two people, on a circumlunar mission in late 2018 using a Falcon Heavy, but the company has provided no updates on the status of that effort since announcing it in February 2017. Musk also confirmed that the Falcon Heavy's hold down test fire will occur sometime next week. SpaceX later released photos of the auto being encapsulated in the rocket's payload fairing.

Friday's launch was the fourth set of 10 satellites in a series of 75 total satellites that SpaceX will launch for Iridium.

The rocket will carry the mysterious Zuma payload, which was supposed to be launched back in November. Although SpaceX announced that it would launch Zuma on 5 January, the mission appears to have hit another snag.

SpaceX said extreme weather slowed down operations, causing the delay.

Falcon Heavy would be launched by January end.

Despite Musk's enthusiasm Thursday, he has previously expressed some concerns. However, the hype surrounding the Falcon Heavy launch is enough to ensure scores of space enthusiasts waiting with bated breath for the launch.

SpaceX does have some customers for the Falcon Heavy queuing up, however. "Excitement on launch day guaranteed, one way or another", he wrote.
