A flip-flop on triple talaq

A flip-flop on triple talaq

Union minister for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar, while asserting the government's commitment to abolish triple talaq, said that the government will now bring the "bill in the Budget Session".

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her party supports the bill but it is full of errors which will put Muslim wives in trouble.

The Centre termed the voting as "historic" and expressed confidence that it would be passed in Rajya Sabha as well. Both the BJP and the Congress had, earlier in the day, issued a whip asking all its MPs to be present in the house today. In the lower house, where the ruling party has a majority, the bill was passed.

Likewise, the objective was to rid the Muslim marriage of an abominable practice, Prasad had said while terming the Bill 'historic.' As for the charge that the BJP was out to exploit the Bill politically, well, if the progressive reform furthers the reformist image the party it can not be grudged the credit. Even the reference of the Bill to a select committee can only aid the BJP attempt to burnish its reformist credentials. They are not thinking about ensuring justice to the Muslim sisters. We want equality and respect for the Muslim women, and the Congress is opposing it.

The BJP leader's remarks came as the deadlock over the bill in the Rajya Sabha continued on Thursday with the government rejecting the opposition's insistence on sending the bill to the Select Committee for detailed scrutiny. He also proposed names of members who could be part of the committee. The bill is still pending in the Upper House and its fate will be decided in the forthcoming budget session beginning January 29. It had, however, said it might be open to accepting some of the amendments to the bill, as suggested by the Opposition.

"We hope the Congress will understand the public opinion on the issue, reconsider their stand and pass it in the Budget session".

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 seeks to criminalise instant divorce, triple talaq. The first, is the argument made mainly by the Left parties that instant triple talaq is a civil matter which is being criminalised.
