HP recalls laptop batteries for overheating...again

So much so that HP has announced the recall of 50,000 lithium-ion laptop batteries that have the danger of catching on fire. This is not a first for HP, as previous year the company also recalled 100,000 laptops for similar battery overheating concerns. The batteries were also sold separately for between $50 and $90.

The affected batteries were shipped with or sold as accessories for these HP laptops: HP ProBooks (640, 645, 650, 655 in G2 and G3 series), HPx360 310 G2, HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360 310 G2, HP 11 Notebook PC, HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3) Mobile Workstations. Then go to the HP website to get instructions on how to get your battery replaced by an authorized technician for free; consumers are not encouraged to replace the batteries themselves.

Many of these batteries can not be replaced by customers. There were three reports of property damage, and one report of a minor burn.

Somehow, the world's largest laptop manufacturer can't seem to stay away from trouble and scandal though, issuing yet another voluntary recall of unsafe batteries just yesterday. If the latter two are not available on the computer, users can download the fully-loaded battery validation utility program instead. What this does is cause the battery to discharge and stay depleted, so you would need to plug your laptop into a wall outlet to continue using it while setting up service. That will prevent the battery from overheating.

To keep users safe while the recall is in progress, HP has also released a firmware update which introduces a new Battery Safety Mode setting.

For those that do find out that their HP system is covered by the recall and replacement program, HP asks these users to apply a BIOS update putting the system into Battery Safety Mode.
