Kyle Edmund gets rematch with Grigor Dimitrov in Brisbane quarters

Top seed and defending champion Grigor Dimitrov moved into the semi-finals of the season-opening Brisbane International after seeing off a fearless challenge from an injured Kyle Edmund on Friday.

As Kyle Edmund fell to the court of the Pat Rafter Arena and clutched his right ankle in pain, even the British supporters must have wondered if they would make it out of Brisbane without picking up an injury.

Dimitrov got an early break in the deciding set and held on to win, saying later the long match would be good for his Australian Open preparations. "I really hope he gets better".

"I only know kind of the initial feelings of it, which is not always so trustworthy, " she said of the injury.

He crashed to the ground with a scream after being wrong-footed by Dimitrov during a rally. The two square off in the quarterfinals tomorrow in Brisbane.

Dimitrov was in control against Edmund as he took the first set but was dragged into a second-set tiebreak which the Briton edged to set up the decider.

Edmund had new strapping applied to his ankle but clearly wasn't moving freely when he returned and lost the next two games, the latter one off his own serve.

"The only positive I can say about losing that first set (against Dolgopolov) is I'm putting myself in some pressure situations and getting some more court time out there which is good". "But I came in here a little more level-headed (than the Raonic match), had more time to play, and was able to play my best tennis". "I just had to find a way again".

Sydneysiders Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson have the other two singles wildcards into the Sydney International.

Harrison moved through when his opponent, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, retired due to a left hip injury with the American leading 7-6 (8/6), 4-2.
