Russia Warns Trump That Foreign Interference in Iran Is 'Inadmissible'

Moderates and reformers led by Rouhani have said people have the right to peacefully protest against economic woes and the government should be open to criticism.

The Iranian news agency, FARS, said global media had ignored larger pro-government counter-demonstrations in favor of the protests against economic conditions and corruption.

Erdogan's comments came after almost a week of protests in Iran marked by deadly violence and hundreds of arrests.

Iran was rocked this week by the largest protests in the country since 2009.

Iran officials announced Monday that they would crack down on protestors and would not permit an "insecure situation to continue in Tehran".

"Iran's growing nuclear activities and its remaining nuclear infrastructure will have been granted legitimacy by the global community, its defensive and offensive military capabilities will be greater, and the United States will have agreed not only to refrain from imposing additional sanctions on Iran for nuclear advances but will also have suspended its most significant sanctions".

"Why should they arrest someone like me when I protest the rise of the price of eggs?" he said.

That brings the estimated death toll to 21 in unrest linked to the protests that began last Thursday in the second city of Mashhad and quickly spread across the country.

Iran's citizens should now realize the truth: Khamenei and his government deliver riches to an elite few (the ones with guns) while stiffing everyone else.

Iran does allow some labor strikes or unauthorized demonstrations to take place, like when coal miners angry over the deaths of at least 42 of their colleagues in an explosion in May confronted Rouhani during his presidential re-election campaign.

Berlin called for the regime to respond to the protests "through dialogue", urging Tehran to "respect freedom of assembly and expression".

An image grab taken from a handout video released by Iran's Mehr News agency reportedly shows a group of men pushing traffic barriers in a street in Tehran

But they along with the hardline security establishment also warned authorities would crack down on any violence after some protesters attacked government buildings and banks.

It was unclear how Iranians viewed Trump's comments, but many are wary of the U.S. president over his travel ban on Iranians and opposition to the 2015 nuclear deal that lifted worldwide sanctions in exchange for curbing Iran's nuclear program.

Paris: If US President Donald Trump has wasted no time in offering vocal support to Iran's anti-government protesters, Europe's governments are treading a much more delicate diplomatic line.

THE FACTS: In Iran, protests must receive prior approval from the Interior Ministry, which oversees its police. The final unique element was revealed in what the people were demanding from the regime's leaders. "You will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time!".

"The president and vice-president of the United States, in their numerous absurd tweets, incited Iranians to engage in disruptive acts", the ambassador wrote to the UN Security Council president and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

"The current USA administration, despite its recent empty statements, has continuously insulted the great Iranian nation and displayed open hostility towards Iranian people", Khoshroo wrote, citing Trump's travel ban on Iranian citizens.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said more than 20 had been killed and hundreds arrested across Iran in the past week. None of the peaceful protests in Iran this past week appear to have received that permission. Rouhani's office did not mention the comment.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of the country's powerful Revolutionary Guards, said the marches marked an end to the anti-government protests, which he referred to as "the sedition".

The protests were fanned in part by messages sent on the Telegram messaging app, which authorities blocked on Sunday along with Instagram.

But the show of strength is unlikely to defuse the tensions underpinning the protests, which have centered in provincial areas that have always been a conservative stronghold. A gunshot and muzzle flash could be seen in the footage taken in Isfahan province, where there have been days of protests.
