J&K: Death toll mounts to 8 in avalanche in Kupwara

Srinagar:Three bodies were recovered and one person was found alive under snow on Saturday after avalanches swept away two sumo vehicles at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

"Five bodies were recovered from the avalanche site", deputy commissioner Kupwara Khalid Jehangir told PTI.

Nearly three hours after the avalanches, a 7-year-old was found alive and shifted to Kupwara hospital from he was referred to Srinagar hospitalized treatment.

"A passenger was pulled out of the snow in the early hours of Saturday morning, while a child was rescued soon after the accident last evening".

An officer of the Indian Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was among those killed after his vehicle was swept away in the avalanche at Sadna Top, a unsafe ascent point along the Kupwara-Tangdhar highway.

A search and rescue operation was launched by teams of police, Army, SDRF and Mountain Rescue.

Officials said that the Rashid is now undergoing treatment at District Hospital Kupwara while Bhat has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.

The incident reportedly happened at 4 pm on the Sadhna Pass which is at a height of 3,000 metres in the Tangdhar region of Kupwara District. "Without the local volunteers, it was quite impossible to recover the bodies in the record time keeping in view the tough terrain and bad weather", he said.

The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for solace to the departed souls.

The Minister expressed deepest condolences with the bereaved families and assured every possible support to them by the state government.
