Massive winter storm slams US East Coast

Massive winter storm slams US East Coast

A strong winter storm may blast parts of northern Florida and southeast Georgia with ice and snow and produce a heavy snowfall in SC.

For a storm to be classified a "bomb", it must meet a set of strict criteria, led by a rapid decline in surface-air pressure, which is the weight of the atmosphere.

Baltimore and Washington could receive snowfall dependent on the storm's path, and so could Philadelphia and New York City, but as much as 4 to 8 inches could fall between Atlantic City and eastern Long Island.

The New York City Department of Education said public schools would be closed Thursday and most likely Friday due to the severe weather.

Further south, the storm's impact will still be substantial. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it "occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies", or quickly drops in atmospheric pressure, marking the strengthening of the storm.

Major east coast winter storm is expected to bring snow, ice, rain, strong winds, and tidal flooding to coastal locations from the southeast U.S.to New England Wednesday into Thursday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Maue drew some attention when he posted a message to Twitter yesterday about the "a truly wonderful extratopical "bomb" cyclone" that's predicted to blow up off the New England coast today.

Meanwhile, blizzard warnings have been issued for coastal areas from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m. The last time was Winter Storm Leon, which produced ice and snow all over the southeastern United States.

"It's snowing in Tallahassee!"

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers warned that every time "you see pink in Florida" you know things are going to be bad.

In the 1940s, some meteorologists began informally calling some big coastal storms "bombs" because they develop "with a ferocity we rarely, if ever, see over land", said Fred Sanders, a retired MIT professor, who brought the term into common usage by describing such storms in a 1980 article in the journal Monthly Weather Review.

"Travel will be unsafe and almost impossible, including during the morning commute on Wednesday", the service said in an advisory for northeastern Florida. Roads won't be plowed with the speed seen in places like OH or MI.
