Fodder scam case: Lalu Prasad Yadav gets jail term of 3.5 years

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail in a fodder scam case by the Special CBI court in Ranchi.

A total of six cases related to the scam, were being probed by the investigation authorities. "We will go to the high court after studying the sentence and apply for a bail", Lalu's son and Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav said.

Yadav, 69, is a former railways minister and ex-chief minister of the impoverished eastern state of Bihar where he enjoys huge popular support for championing lower castes.

CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh, who had convicted Prasad, along with 10 others on December 23, also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on him for two cases in the scam.

"Come what may Lalu will never get scared, nor will he even kneel down".

In the fodder scam case, out of 22 accused, 16 were convicted.

The counsel said failure to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each under the IPC and the PCA would entail another six months in jail for the RJD leader. Lalu's son said that he would approach the Patna high court for his father's bail.

Earlier today, while hearing the case, the judge said that 'an open jail is best for these people (convicts), as they also have experience of cow farming.

The RJD supremo is lodged in the Hotwar Central Jail in Ranchi since December 23.

The CBI court had acquitted another former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and five others in the case, relating to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury between 1990 and 1994.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others were convicted in a fodder scam case.

However, the court could not pronounce the quantum of punishment on January 5 as well and the sentencing deferred for one more day.
