U.S. faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said the emergency session put Iran on notice that "the world will be watching" its actions.

He said that Iran has reached some of its most important post-JCPOA deals with France and added "unless France corrects its conduct toward the Islamic Republic of Iran, we must not allow their officials, including the french foreign minister, to visit Iran".

Once again, the USA and the media are interfering with internal Iranian affairs.

"The Iranian situation did not pose a threat to global peace and security, and discussing its domestic situation is not part of the Council's responsibilities as outlined in the Charter", he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump is cheering on demonstrators in Iran for standing up to their government over the hard economic times.

Heated debate took place on the floor of the Security Council at the United Nations headquarters in NY after its 15 members were gathered at the request of the USA to discuss the current situation in Iran. "The world will be watching what you do", Haley told a meeting of the UN Security Council.

"The Iranian people are rising up in over 79 locations throughout the country", Haley told the council.

The meeting was a defeat for US diplomatic interests as countries in the Security Council defended the principles of sovereignty and non-interventionism.

Observing that the Council's primary responsibility is maintaining global peace and security, Wu Haito of China said that it should not be the venue for discussing the human rights situation of any country.

Still, the United Nations charter empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction", and the US wasn't alone in thinking the Iranian protests qualified.

"However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute per se a threat to global peace and security", Ambassador Francois Delattre said.

Khoshroo said Iran has "hard evidence" that violence is being directed from overseas, and went on to describe recent instances in which foreign citizens have incited violence in Iran.

Earlier in the week, the US government announced it was suspending security assistance to the country.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for demonstrators in Iran and engaged in heightened rhetoric, the United States is likely to hang back and avoid direct involvement, U.S. experts said.

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif pointed to Mr. Trump's own previous comments voicing support for the Iranian people, saying the U.S. leader had an "odd way of showing "such respect" for Iranians".

Iran's interior minister said up to 42,000 people took part during the week of protests.

He said the administration of President Donald Trump, in "numerous absurd tweets, had incited Iranians to engage in disruptive acts" which violated worldwide law. The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.
