Man City boss Pep Guardiola: It's an honour to manage Sergio Aguero

Man City boss Pep Guardiola: It's an honour to manage Sergio Aguero

Ilkay Gundogan hailed the brilliance of Manchester City team-mate Sergio Aguero after the pair combined to turn around their FA Cup tie against Burnley.

Aguero fired home after 56 minutes with City's first shot on target after Gundogan found him with a quickly-taken free-kick, and then benefited from a backheel by the same player before rounding Nick Pope to score.

David Silva then set up a third goal for Leroy Sane before substitute Bernardo Silva wrapped up the scoring.

In contrast, Burnley looked a threat on the rare occasions they broke forward though they should give Stones the assist for taking the lead after 25 minutes.

"Both of Sergio Aguero's goals were fantastic, there were clever and quick and I am happy with both of his goals", Guardiola told reporters.

"For me is an honour to coach a player like Aguero". We need his goals. They will be without young midfielder Callum O'Dowda who played the full 90 minutes in four of their five EFL Cup matches, but went down with a serious ankle injury in late November.

"If we want to win something this year, and the next, and the following years, Aguero's presence is fundamental", he said. The good thing is that we have two legs, so even if we don't show our best performance in the first leg, there is a second opportunity. After that, we had all our confidence back, started to keep the ball and play very well.

Guardiola said that with the Champions League resuming in one month's time, this taste of knockout football was a reminder to his players of what will be at stake.

Despite the early setback, there was no reason to be alarmed for Guardiola and Co.

Guardiola said: "Maybe that question can be asked in March or April if we are still in all four competitions". It is not easy to go back and forth to Spain and play the way we did.

Bristol City have lost two games on the bounce in the Championship and have dropped to fourth as a result.

"I'm sorry, I apologise, I didn't want to lose control", Guardiola said. "In saying that, I do believe in the qualities in our squad and the challenge is to make sure we play our game".

"Bit of a contentious one when Ashley is a few yards away motioning and he's the man supposed to be in the slot they passed it through, so I am bound to be aggrieved", Dyche said.
