Natalie Portman: Our cause raises $14m in 2 weeks

The Black Swan actress blasted the voters of the awards show, which are organised by Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), for failing to include any female directors in its Best Director category as she took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles to present the prize with Ron Howard. It has also established a legal defense fund for victims of sexual assault. "Here are the all male nominees", she wittily said as Howard began to rile off the nominations.

The statement won rave reviews on social media.

Some of Portman's fellow actresses also chimed in with Mindy Kaling tweeting: 'Yas Natalie Get Em Girl'. However, it was Natalie Portman who truly took the cake.

"I couldn't believe someone had to immediately follow Oprah and then Natalie Portman comes through with that", Twitter user said. Of the five other female directors who have been nominated at the Golden Globes - Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Ava DuVernay (Selma) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty) - DuVernay is the only non-white woman.

That was for her 1984 movie "Yentl". Some 16 years ago, The Hours and Chicago were the last pair to achieve the feat.

In the end, the award for best director went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape Of Water.

And we need more women of color in the director's chair. Stories of misogyny in Hollywood were so disturbing that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission launched an investigation into sexism against female directors in 2016 - over a year before the Weinstein revelations and the #MeToo movement. "Lady Bird", directed by Greta Gerwig, won for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress.
