We Are Blood in critical need of Type O blood

Todd Kulman - with the Red Cross of MI - says the severe winter weather over the past few weeks has been a major cause of the shortage, along with high levels of sick people during this cold and flu season. More than 150 blood drives were forced to cancel because of it, causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. This is in addition to the annual lull in donations due to busy holiday schedules, and a significant outbreak of the flu which prevents donors from coming in.

The American Red Cross is asking people in Central Washington to donate blood in response to potential shortages in the eastern United States. @RedCrossBloodNC @RedCross need your #help now!

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Christy Peters, external communications manager of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all require blood to help save their lives.

The agency critically needs donations of platelets, which have a short shelf life.

Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.

Thesenga tells KARE 11 that while 38 percent of Americans are eligible to donate, just 10 percent do.

Donors can schedule an appointment by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-733-2767.

"We encourage everyone who can safely come out and donate to do so", said Debbie Bonzak, executive director for LifeShare Community Blood Services in the release.
